Esmeralda Peaks Loop 2014-10-02

12.22 miles and 2,797 feet of elevation gain.

We drove up to the trailhead at end of the road and spent the night.  We were on the trail just after daylight and did a counterclockwise loop.  There is a trail that parallels the road back to the De Roux campground and the trailhead for the Boulder De Roux trail.  With an early start on clear fall day, it was quite chilly until we were almost over the pass, on the north side on the loop, and had some sunshine.

Right after arriving at the trailhead, the night before the hike, Blue found some "good" stuff.

On the trail

Hawkins Mountain

Gallagher Head Lake, I thought it would be bigger.

The boys were interested in the coyotes yipping in the morning.

This is a definitely a "4WD" road, you need some real ground clearance to get by these rocks

Northeast portion of Hawkins Mountain

About two-thirds of the way up to the pass is a little flat spot that would make a great campsite.

After the pass heading into the basin for the North Fork Teanaway River and back to the trailhead.

After Sly's big run to who knows where.
